Coffee Cup at 99.7°F to My Attic Scan: Why Thermal Imaging Matters for Hill Country Roofs

Hey neighbors, Mario Fender here from Klaus Roofing Systems of Texas Hill Country in New Braunfels.

I just shot a quick video reel showing something that’s been making a big difference on our roof jobs lately — thermal imaging with my new HSFTOOLS HF96V camera. It’s going up on our Facebook page real soon, and I wanted to write this quick blog post so you can get the full story behind it.

Why I’m Showing a Coffee Cup on a Thermal Camera

In the video, I start simple: my morning coffee cup is still sitting at 99.7 degrees while the table underneath it is only 71. That little demo shows how this tool picks up real temperature differences right in front of you. Nothing fancy — just real life.

Then I take it up into my own attic. You’ll see me scanning near the insulation at 88.6 degrees and up near the ridge vent at 100.6. That tight 12-degree spread tells me the hot air is rising and getting out like it should. No major heat buildup.

What This Means for Your House Here in the Hill Country

Texas heat is no joke. When attic ventilation isn’t working right, those temperatures can climb to 130-150°F or more up there. That trapped heat pushes down into your living space, makes your AC work overtime (hello higher bills), and literally bakes your roof from the inside out. It shortens shingle life, causes premature wear, and can lead to bigger problems down the road — especially with our hail storms and wild temperature swings.

Good ventilation and proper airflow keep things cooler up top, protect your roof, and save you money on cooling costs. That’s why we’ve started using thermal imaging on every Roof Health Scan we do.

I Test This Stuff on My Own House First

I’m not out here selling something I haven’t checked myself. I scanned my own attic before I ever brought the camera on customer jobs. That’s how we do things at Klaus Roofing — honest, local, and practical. We serve New Braunfels, Canyon Lake, Garden Ridge, Vintage Oaks, Boerne, and the rest of the Texas Hill Country. No storm chasers, no pressure tactics — just neighbors helping neighbors keep their homes protected.

Ready for Your Own Thermal Scan?

If you’ve got questions about your attic ventilation, roof condition, or just want peace of mind before the next big heat wave or hail season, shoot me a message. Comment “THERMAL” on the Facebook post, DM me, or contact us and we’ll get a Roof Health Scan scheduled. It’s one of the best ways we can catch small issues before they turn into expensive repairs.

Thanks for watching the video and reading this. We’re a local, family-owned roofing company focused on doing right by our neighbors with quality work, 50-year warranties, and real tools that actually help. Got roof questions? I’m here.
