Impact Resistant Shingles - What Every Homeowner Around New Braunfels Needs to Know

Hey, Mario Fender here with Klaus Roofing Systems of Texas Hill Country in New Braunfels.

One of the most common questions I get when I’m out doing inspections is whether impact resistant shingles are really worth the extra money.

Short answer: In our part of Central Texas, they usually are.

Hail isn’t some once-in-a-blue-moon thing here. It rolls through Comal County, Canyon Lake, Seguin, and the Hill Country almost every spring — sometimes multiple times a year. I’ve seen marble-size and golf-ball-size hail crack standard shingles and leave homeowners with big insurance claims and headaches.

What are impact resistant shingles? They’re regular asphalt shingles that have been beefed up with extra reinforcement — things like polymer-modified asphalt and a rubberized backing. The goal is simple: when hail or debris hits, the shingle flexes instead of cracking or shattering.

Most of the good ones carry a Class 4 rating — the highest impact rating you can get on asphalt shingles. They test them by dropping a 2-inch steel ball from a set height. No visible cracking = it passes.

Why this matters for us in the Hill Country Texas leads the whole country in hail damage claims. And right here in Comal, Hays, and Guadalupe counties we sit smack in the middle of it. Between the hail, 100-degree summers, intense UV, and those sudden heavy rains, a standard shingle takes a beating.

Class 4 shingles handle that punishment a lot better.

Here’s what I tell homeowners:

  1. They take hail hits way better — fewer cracked shingles and less granule loss after storms.
  2. They last longer in our heat — the reinforced materials hold up better under all the thermal cycling we get.
  3. Insurance discounts are real — a lot of Texas carriers give 15–30% off your premium when you have verified Class 4 roofing. That can be hundreds of dollars a year. Ask your agent before you replace your roof.
  4. Fewer repairs over time — which means fewer claims and a cleaner insurance history.
  5. Better peace of mind — your roof (and everything under it) is just tougher.

Cost difference? Yeah, they cost 10–20% more upfront. But for most homes around here, the insurance savings plus fewer repairs usually make up for it over the life of the roof.

Installation is basically the same as regular shingles, but you want a crew that knows what they’re doing with Class 4 material so you actually get the rating and the warranty.

Bottom line If your roof is due for replacement anyway, upgrading to impact resistant (Class 4) shingles is one of the smartest moves you can make in New Braunfels or the Hill Country. It’s not magic — a baseball-size hailstone can still do damage — but it cuts down the frequency and severity of problems a lot.
